Planning fundamentals
A plan is more than a portfolio
Ask most people what financial planning is and they will describe investing. Which funds, what mix, how it did last quarter. That is one piece, and an important one. It is not the whole thing.
A portfolio tells you how your money is invested. A plan tells you what the money is for, and whether the rest of your life is arranged to support that.
The pieces around the portfolio
When I think about a complete plan, the investments sit in the middle of a few other things that deserve equal attention:
- Cash flow. What comes in, what goes out, and what is left to put to work.
- Taxes. Where assets are held and when income is recognized can matter as much as what is owned.
- Risk management. Insurance and emergency reserves keep a bad year from becoming a derailed plan.
- Retirement and goals. The target that gives the portfolio a job to do.
- Estate planning. Making sure the right people receive the right assets, the way you intend.
Why the order matters
When the goals come first, investment decisions get easier. The right level of risk follows from the money's purpose and timeline, instead of from whatever the market did this month. And when markets get noisy, a plan gives you something steadier to look at than a headline.
If you have only ever thought about the investing piece, that is a perfectly normal place to start. It is just worth knowing there is more to build around it.
